Exploring God's Omnipotence

Today, let’s look at our omnipotent God. What does omnipotence mean?

Definition of Omnipotence

This term comes from the Latin words omni, meaning “all,” and potens, meaning “powerful.” God’s omnipotence means that He is all-powerful. He can do anything, and no one can oppose Him.

Bible Passages Teaching God’s Omnipotence

  • Job 42:2—Job said that God could do anything.
  • Matthew 19:26—Christ said that with God, all things were possible.
  • Revelation 19:6—A great crowd in heaven declared that the all-powerful God reigns.
  • Psalms 8, 18, 19, 24, 29, 33 and 104—Nothing can stop God from doing what He pleases.
  • Genesis 18:14; Zechariah 8:6; Luke 1:37, 18:27—Nothing is too hard for God.
  • Job 9:4; Psalm 115:3; Isaiah 14:24, 27; 46:10; 55:11—God will accomplish what He desires.

God’s Titles of Omnipotence

One of God’s names used in the Old Testament is El-Shaddai. It means, “the All-Sufficient One, the Lord God Almighty.”

God’s title of El-Shaddai appears 48 times in the Old Testament. Job frequently refers to God using this name.

Some other passages addressing God as El-Shaddai:

  • Psalm 91:1
  • Isaiah 13:6

Children’s Illustrated Activity

Give some modeling compound to your child and instruct them to create a small person. Next, tell them to make that little person come alive. When they can’t, explain that God was able to create real, living people. He created everything using only His words!

Application

Because God is most powerful and can do whatever He desires, I can confidently trust Him to control the events in my life.

Discussion Questions
